Fingene Labs

The researchbehind the product.

Fingene Labs is the research arm of Fingene. It looks carefully at how people behave around money, publishes what it finds, and labels how sure it is. Denser than Insights, and clear about what is still early.

Working paper no. 1

Why access did not fix behaviour.

A reading of retail investing in India. Access to markets has widened enormously, and outcomes for first-time investors have not obviously improved with it. This paper asks what is going on underneath, and whether repeat losses look more like behaviour than like ignorance.

It is in preparation. When it is ready it will be free to read, with its sources linked and its limits stated.

Why Access Didn’t Fix Behaviour

Early hypothesis, not validated.

Working papers describe our own framework and early findings. They are not peer-reviewed unless we say so, they are never investment advice, and they are never a claim that anything has been proven.

What Labs does

Three jobs, done in the open.

Study

How people behave around money

Patterns, states and situations: why the same person decides differently at different moments, and what tends to repeat.

Test

Whether our own ideas hold up

A validation study of the eight Genes is in progress. We will report what it finds, whatever it finds.

Explain

In plain language

Working papers for those who want depth, and Insights essays for everyone else. Both are written to be understood.

On the way

What comes next.

  • Working paper no. 1

Why access did not fix behaviour. In preparation.

  • A validation study of the Genes

How stable the eight patterns are, and whether they describe people the way we think they do. In progress.

  • Explainers

Short pieces on what the Behavior Score is and is not, and why the same person decides differently late in the day.

  • Further working papers

Timed to the product and the questions you ask us. Dates will be announced when they are real.

Principles

What Labs holds to.

Labs will

Be honest about evidence

  • Label hypotheses as hypotheses
  • Link sources wherever we use them
  • Publish what we find, even when it is inconvenient
  • Keep research separate from marketing
Labs will not

Overclaim

  • Present early work as proof
  • Rate or recommend any security
  • Predict markets or returns
  • Publish individual user data
